Organic farming is regulated legally in Spain from 1989, which approved the Regulation of the Generic Name “Ecological Agriculture”, which was applicable until the entry into force of Regulation (EEC) 2092/91 on the ecological agricultural production and its indication in agrarian products and foodstuffs.

In Spain, the control and certification of organic agricultural production falls within the competence of the Autonomous Communities and is carried out mainly by public control authorities, through territorial Ecological Agriculture councils or committees which are bodies under the responsibility of the relevant agricultural councils or departments, or directly by the Directorates-General attached to them.

All this means that the farm or industry where the product has been produced or processed is subject to the appropriate checks and inspections of the authority or body established for that purpose in the respective autonomous community. It constitutes, in turn, the only official guarantee that the product responds to the quality assumed by the consumer and complies with the rules laid down in Regulation (EC) 834/2007 and its Implementing Rules.
